I’ve had a few people contact me over the years asking if I would “do SEO” on their site ~ a one shot deal and then, and I quote “the site should be ok”.

They couldn’t be more wrong. And no, I didn’t do the one shot deal either because in my professional opinion, a one shot deal does the client no good beyond giving the site a temporary boost and then down it goes again into the abyss.

SEO can be thought of as nurturing care for a website. It’s not a mega shot of juice in the arm and you bounce off happily to the top of the charts.

Real and true SEO done properly starts off with a thorough analysis of the site or home page, whichever the client wants. Some clients just want the home page done because that is the site the search engine spiders hit first, and usually index first. That’s fine, although the entire site should be taken care of, sort of in a follow up manner. However, performing SEO on the home page exclusively is often adequate.

The thorough analysis covers many aspects ~ the client industry, their specific products, effective use of the best verbiage for both marketing purposes and keyword density, effective use of the meta tags of the site to the client’s advantage, competitor analysis, search engine positioning………. the list is long, and must be covered thoroughly in order to give the client the best overall advantage over his/her competition and in their rise in the search engines.

The analysis needs to be discussed with the client, and their web master / mistress if they have one, so that the suggested / recommended tweaks can be carried out and implemented effectively and in a timely manner. Or, the client needs to be taught how to administer the tweaks themselves so they can be independent and handle their own venue responsibly.

Then the waiting game begins.

If the tweaks were implemented correctly, the search engines should be picking up noticeable differences within 2-3 days. They should also be picking up multiple pages from the website as well. The process needs to be monitored closely and then attended to again month to month. Re-analyzing, tweaking, and reviewing.

Within 3 months there should be a noticeable change in the websites overall positioning in the search engines and in the website traffic stats as well, and perhaps even in the sales volume.

In the 3-6 month range, 6-9 month range and finally the 9-12 month range, the website should be continually on the rise, with more overall search engine coverage and a significant rise in traffic and sales.

SEO is truly a nurturing procedure for the website and can bring a website out of the proverbial sandbox and into the mainstream much quicker than expected, if done right.
